Blissfully happy.

Not much else to say, really. Except to possibly include the message my friend Mark sent to me, which made me well up with warm feelings and gratitude for the people I have around me in this life.

"Your FB incarnation is giving off waves of happiness and well-being.

This rocks. In fact, this hoists a monster stoppie and is carried on the shoulders of peers into a Social D gig - it really does rock that much. The good things happening for you are making the world a better place for all of us.

Have a fucking blindingly good Christmas, my friend."

He's the bees knees! he really is.

Well, who would have thunk it!

I have found myself in a relationship. A lovely relationship, with a guy who adores me and treats me well and buys me ridiculously generous gifts I feel bad (but secretly happy about) receiving. A relationship with a complicated, funny, affectionate, emotionally giving and smart guy.

I have no roadmap for good relationships and i'm not sure how to go about all of this.

I've had a little attack of the girlishness and bought nail polish and perfume as some sort of reaction. I've not bought either of these products for nigh on ten years. My way of combating the girlishness is that the polish is black and the perfume is not flowery :)

It takes every ounce of my energy...

to stop myself from telling him I'm falling completely head over heels for him.

I've found a number of moments where stopping myself from blurting it out has been physically painful, I swear. I have no frame of reference for this situation I'm in, and it is fairly terrifying.

But he's wonderful, and everything I have said to him has been completely reciprocated. How close we've become in such a short space of time makes me a little dizzy. His flip flopping between 'let's see where it goes' and 'I don't want a serious relationship' is doing my head in a little, but I can see why he's confused by it all.

Argh.

Oh jeez

How things just turn on their head.

Travel brain

I've been thinking about Boston over the last few days. How I'd love to go back! This is partly for naughty, naughty reasons which can never be fulfilled, of course. Blood is thicker than water so I could never do what I wanted to do (beyond one sneaky and short-lived kiss in a stairwell), but damn Jacob was cute. .. I did quite fancy the idea of a holiday romance at the time, and do still :)

Arms

The email Aaron sent me confirmed which tattoo I'm going to get first. I don't generally believe in signs, but what he wrote to me made me think.

'this too shall pass' will be on my arm in January. Jessee is coming with me to slap the nervousness out of me and hold my (other) hand so I don't run from the shop.

I wonder whether living on ice cubes is viable.

I am so fat and utterly disgusting that I don't even know where to begin.

Ugh.

Thursday, November 4, 2010

Probably the loveliest email I've ever received.

"hey Gab,

keep your eyes on the prize. life can be shit sometimes and things can get you down but they do pass.

you dont need some drop kick to show you attention to feel loved and special, you are special to a lot of people. we love you. you don't need others to fluff your self esteem, just look at the person you are and who you want to become.

you are an awesome woman... and a great social worker. don't let anyone (including yourself) tell you otherwise.

you are fearfully and wonderfully made."

Wednesday, November 3, 2010

Breathe, breathe, breathe.

Give him the flick. He's a semi-douche.

I'm completely aware

That I'm digging a huge hole for myself. I've spent a fuckload of cash I don't have. I've put placement on hold for a week. I've not done my essay. I've sat on the couch all day - sans even showering - just watching DVDs. I seriously haven't left the couch except to go to the bathroom or the fridge.

I know exactly what I am doing. I just don't know how to stop.

Tuesday, November 2, 2010

Who would've thunk it!

I'm pretty far beyond disappointed/hurt by your actions, man.
Paranoia!

Love!

"This was not a rally to ridicule people of faith or people of activism, or look down our noses at the heartland or passionate argument, or to suggest that times are not difficult and we have nothing to fear. They are and we do.

The image of Americans that is reflected back to us by our political and media process is false. [Americans hear] how fragile our country is, on the brink of catastrophe, torn by polarizing hate, and how it's a shame that we can't work together to get things done. The truth is, we do. We work together to get things done every damn day. The only place we don't is here or on cable TV."

I love you, Jon Stewart.

Everything is going to be okay!

It really will be. It'll be a fantastic Summer, too. I need to keep in mind that I have some fantastic people around me, and I don't want for anything. It's kind of funny that as soon as I have decided that and said 'be done with it', Lindsay goes and calls me. It was due to geographical proximity (Facebook 'Places' has paid off), but honestly! I'm still not sure what his intentions are, and whether he is intentionally messing with me. I just need to keep that in mind and keep him at arms length, I think. Remind myself constantly to not fall into old habits of intentionally chasing boys who treat me like shit like it's some kind of drug :)

That said, I am still unsure of where the Jessee thing is headed. Right now I'm feeling kind of zen about it all, to be honest. He needs the summer to get his head together and get his mojo back, and I'm on a path of dealing with some long-neglected issues, too. Maybe some day we'll work something out. We said we weren't closing that door completely. We just both need to be in the right place, and historically that is not our forte! :) If nothing else he is the best mate a girl could ask for, and he'd do anything for me and vice versa.

I'm happy with that.

Some really amazing people have my back. Here's to Jess, Liv and Adam.

The start or the end?

I have to stave off this ridiculous panic, sadness and petulance that keep hitting me when I think about him and his inscrutable mixed signals. I am over it. I really am. I just wish it had turned into something.

I never thought I'd hit 30 completely unable to start or maintain any sort of relationship.

I'm really quite terrified of how short life is and how fast it is slipping away from me.

Ever since reading The Shipping News...

I've wanted to go to Newfoundland. I'll pass on the seal flipper pie.

Thursday, October 21, 2010

I sometimes wonder

if any of my friends like me at all.

How odd is that?

Monday, October 18, 2010

I think it took what Jessee said to get through to me. This has got to change.

Saturday, October 16, 2010

Wow.

That was a really, really STUPID thing to have done.

I feel horrible.

Friday, October 15, 2010

Hmmmm

I cannot work him out. When we seem to have such a good time together, why does he show so little initiative or ask me to do anything?

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

The lights are off, the door is open and the rain is bucketing down.

:)

Saturday, October 2, 2010

All that aside...

Life is brilliant. Blue skies. I have such a strong feeling that this summer is going to be brilliant.

*sigh*

I know I've said it before, but when it rains it pours with me. Saying I'm a bit confused is an understatement. Between the conversation a couple days ago with JB about how right we are for each other on paper but there's no physical attraction, and then where the Lindsay situation is heading I was already a little overwhelmed.

And then today.

I genuinely thought that Jessee hadn't considered us to be a possibility but apparently he has, and has been a lot as things have disintegrated with Michelle. He thinks we'd ultimately just drive each other mad, and I know I would never trust him completely. But I can't help but say 'what if?' over and over in my head, as there has always been an attraction there and - for me at least - genuine feelings to whatever degree. We decided to not close the door on it completely, but I am going to see where things go with Lindsay. Jess encouraged me to do so, too and I know I should.

Things are never simple.

[Edit]

Who am I trying to kid? I've thought 'what if?' about Jessee ever since we ever met. There's a reason I've never felt guilty about us sneaking around together (which in turn made me feel guilty for not feeling guilty!)

We shall see.

The elephant in the room

Oh, JB.

It is too frustrating. We are so odd. I find it strangely comforting that we've talked about it now - finally - but how very, very odd.

"I should be in love with you but I'm not. I like you a lot. My inner voice is saying I should be. I wish I was, more than anything."

I hear you. I feel exactly the same. Maybe some day.

(I find it funny that I have never mentioned any of this before. Liv doesn't know about it. Maybe I was keeping it secret and just for me. Who knows.)

Saturday, September 25, 2010

I think I like this one :)

He's different. A bit reserved. He has dreads, which I usually dislike, but don't mind on him. And I actively enjoy the filthy text messages he sends me, which is unheard of.

He makes me laugh. He likes the same films. He doesn't put up with my potential for clingyness, which is a good thing! My friends seem to like him, especially Liv and Jessee.

Hmmmm.

Spring has most definitely sprung.

Spring is here! Time for some more 'future house' photos

Things are amazing.

:D

What a lovely weekend. Many high points, but two stand out.

On Saturday night I co-hosted an awesome, awesome party (besides some unpleasantness I was thankfully not witness to) but during said party I got my two best friends back. Liv and I have been great for ages, but I think the talk we had finally cemented us as 'okay' again. More than okay. Amazing :) And as for Jessee. We're finally okay, too. We needed to end the physical nature of our relationship once and for all and it happened on Saturday night. A sober conversation between he and I is a rare thing, but the stars aligned that night.

I love you both so very much :)

Friday, September 10, 2010

One thing I have found living with Bron is that we have *exactly* the same taste in design.

Wiseausaurus!

The loveliest cake in the world.

Sunday, September 5, 2010

Wow.

This weekend has been interesting. It's left me with a lot to think about. I've never actually been called out on or lectured on my relationship with Jessee, but I was on Saturday. I don't think it's right that a prospective relationship with someone else should be the excuse for things between Jessee and I to cease, but it may have to be. I can't seem to control myself with him. Lame, I know, and totally not an excuse.

Other than the sexual side of things, he's one of only a very small number of people I would seriously kill for if need be, and really the only one I know would do the same for me. I do trust him completely. In a way I kind of mourn losing that side of things with him if I get into a relationship.

Could I be any more screwed up?

I can't afford a cow...

All my friends are fuck ups, but they're fun to have around.

My very first boyfriend reminded me of something today. It's been 10 years since I made one of the best decisions of my life, and caught a plane with Lisa Zalstein up to Sydney. That night dictated the next 4 years of my life; 4 years of amazing memories, thousands of kilometres, a lot of red wine and vodka, some heartache, a substantial amount of cash and mischief and some people I still love a lot despite geography in many instances, lack of contact in some and in my case little interest and a bit of disgust in what brought us together in the first place.

But it was one hell of a ride!

Monday, August 9, 2010

Wow

I feel heartbroken, when I know it's the last thing I am. My mind seems to know no bounds in its efforts to knock me on my arse. It is really quite astounding.

It's just my ego that's been bruised, nothing more. Ego and loneliness, my desperate need for connections and a certain desire for security.

This is fucking ridiculous.

I shouldn't have mixed feelings about being moral.

But I do. In this instance, anyway.

I'm going to miss it, even though I essentially knew it was wrong and knew this for years. I managed to justify it on a number of fronts.

I kind of miss it already even though it only happened a couple times a year.

Anxiety! Anxiety! I have to remind myself it's just PMS...

I am actually seriously worried about you now, Jessee. What the fuck.

Things I am looking forward to about moving.

1) Having a usable bathtub. BATHS!
2) Having enough bench space in the kitchen for more than one.
3) Having a backyard (of sorts)
4) Having a blue front door.
5) Having a house that will actually look clean when I clean it.
6) Dishwasher! European laundry!

My new house :D I love my blue door!

I have my finger's crossed

I put some house applications in today. I have my heart set on one, and would be relatively happy with the other, so we shall see. I know moving is a pain in the arse, but I do enjoy the hunt and the capture.

And once all the stuff is moved and I have paid the removalists? A few moments of sheer unadulterated *BLISS* sets in. The piles upon piles of boxes and mess mean nothing. I was *so* happy when I got my current house, but the crappy bathroom and kitchen have taken their toll so it is time to move on, especially since the landlord is putting the rent up.

I so hope we get the Brickworks townhouse. I have always had a vague interest in living there, it really is quite adorable, and right next to the park to go walking. It's nice and close to Dech, Sally and Dave's place too.

Friday, July 30, 2010

Breathe, Gab.

Stop trying to fool yourself. Stop turning it into something it's not. You'll only push him away.  You can see it happening already - to a degree - and you have some really weird, compulsive behaviour, girl. So silly!

Y'know what? Just stay away from men in general! It will serve you well.

Grandpa

I still cry thinking about you on your (almost) birthday. 11 years on and I still cry when I tell a new friend about you. It happened just the other day.

I miss you so very much, old man.

Bored.

Really bored. This is when I start messaging people to see what they're up to.

I'm trying to change that. I need to flick a switch that says 'go for a walk', 'read a book', 'get on the treadmill', 'learn something new', or 'study' during term time.

This is - as I am - a Work in Progress.

sweet meats

I love that there's a place called 'The Tenderloin' area. This is in San Francisco. I actually rather like it. I'd live in that pretty blue building on the left.

Thoughts on moving

I guess I should be glad there are some constants in the world. In terms of where you shouldn't even bother considering moving to, not much changes in the North of Melbourne. North Fitzroy, North Melbourne, North Carlton/Princes Hill and Clifton Hill are way over priced. Brunswick is getting much the same way and the houses are not as nice as in the aforementioned suburbs.

We're looking at Coburg and possibly Brunswick West for the time being. Time is not a pressing matter just yet, but we need to start actively looking by the end of July/start of August. We also need to determine the 3rd housemate criteria, though going on how easy and healthy and good our housemate relationship is I think we have that sorted as well.

As for dreams? I would like a back deck and lounge room fireplaces very much. I would like a backyard that doesn't remind me of the Fred and Rosemary West backyard of horrors. I would like a kitchen at least double the size of what we currently have and decent looking, with actual bench space. I would like a bathroom that doesn't draw gasps of horror or at least disdain from me every time I go in.  Oh, and we really do want to get a kitty!

This is really not that much to ask.

Thursday, July 8, 2010

*shrugs*

Maybe I'm unreasonable, but I find it increasingly irritating that a friend with a 5 month old baby suddenly has nothing else to talk about on Facebook. Every single status update is about their friggin' child. Is there nothing else of interest? This may be an example of one of the reasons I don't want kids. Call me self-centred if you wish, but I find it boring.

I'm all kinds of optimistic right now

Wow. This thing with L has got outta control! It is *not* good to want to jump someone you work with this much! But he distracts me somewhat.

I (heart) this kitchen

I'm hosting what is looking to be Games Night 2010 this weekend. A pot of mulled wine is being cooked up and 15 or so of my favourite people will be in attendance.

*squee*

Life is good!

I'm getting quite into Rufus Wainwright. Perfect mulled wine night tunes.

It looks like the housie and I will be moving on (together) in September. We want a house and a kitty to live with us.

Monday, June 14, 2010

Peaceful

I'm feeling quite at ease at the moment. Quite in control. I've been drinking glasses of wine. I've been spending time with only those who make me feel good and whom I trust. I've been listening to songs, and sitting on piers late at night, catching up on True Blood episodes and wearing my fringe down. I think wearing my fringe down more has got to mean something.

And, oh! I have crushes. Well, really only one crush, but it's a bigg'n and he is a mystery to me. It could be good or it could be a disaster, but as much as it is scaring me, I'm enjoying it in a perverse way.

I am okay. I am good.

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

I'm not sure...

But I think I may have a date tomorrow. Goddamn you, social complexities!

*shakes fist*

ps. No pretty pictures until my interwebs stops being shaped.

pps. It was so, so lovely to see Dean Friday night :) Apologies for abandoning him with a drunken Patrick Bruce :(

Moral compass.

I should feel guilt, but I really don't.

All I hope for is for him to make the right decision and be done with her. It's not about me, though. I think that ship has sailed and we'd not be right together, anyway - he wants kids and would be such an amazing dad. I have not a maternal bone in my body, except sometimes in being overprotective of my friends. I don't think it would translate into being an actual parent in any decent or substantial way, and I have never felt like I wanted them.

I just want him to be happy.

Thursday, June 3, 2010

I'm torn in so many different geographical directions and will never be able to afford any of them.

I want to hole up in a cabin on Cape Cod.

Bunch of savages

I cannot believe I work in a place that tolerates such disgraceful behaviour and bullying. If someone (and we know who it is) doesn't get the arse over this bullshit, I am going to fucking kill someone!

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Things I haven't done.

I'm trying not to think about it but coming up to turning 30 this year, I'm incredulous and really quite sad about some things I haven't done yet. Not some ridiculous or existential list, just little things.

I haven't gone exploring Europe.

That's really the big one. I know I have to get some stuff out of the way first. I need to finish my Masters degree and then save some cash, but by golly, I am OUTTA HERE once I do.

(Not that it actually bothers me - I would never do it anyway - but I will be TOO OLD TO QUALIFY for Contiki by the time I get there - LOLZ!)

Monday, May 31, 2010

Okay, only 1 assignment to go...

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

If I could miraculously make anyone appear at my birthday party at the end of the year it would be Jacqui.

Damn you, Germany!

She's my oldest friend in the world - since we were 8 - and although we have had long periods of being out of touch, she means so very much to me!

Thought of the day

"It's like being caught in a flesh storm with a 90% chance of satisfaction."

cull

I should trust fewer - and invest less in - people.

Last night reminded me of that.

You're kidding yourself if you think more people than those you can count on two hands are truly worth it or in it for the long haul. You don't even have the time to properly nurture anything with any more people than that.

Perhaps I need to cull.

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

Gab is all over the shop.

Maybe it is jut hormones. Maybe not.

I'm wanting some big changes.

I want a safe place to hide.

In an ideal world it would consist of a couch in a country house belonging to either JT or Jessee. Someone I like to hug. Someone I don't have drama with. Someone I don't see all the time, or feel insecure about.

Argh.

busy busy beeeee

I have around 10,000 words to write over the next 6 weeks. I don't think I'll be writing in here that much.

Almost winter.

It's a special time in Melbourne. It means coffee. Alleys. Rainy streets. Mulled wine. Hidden gems. Coats. Boots. Steamed up glasses. Adventures. Goodness.

lovely

I'm not sure how to put this, but I've been feeling such a huge amount of love and appreciation for my dear friend Jessee lately. We hardly ever see each other, but I do get a bit *squee* with excitement on the rare occasions when I do get to. He doesn't mind me hugging him heaps which is a plus :)

I have some very good people around me. Indeedy. I forget that sometimes, or get paranoid and disconnected, but I truly am very lucky.

What a nice start to the week!

Grimsey is off to Europe

jealousy abounds!

I have been dreaming about going to Mont St Michel the last few days and yearning.

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

I need some new music.

I'm not talking about downloads. I am craving going and picking out some CD's and taking them home and reading all the liner notes and looking at all the pictures. Honestly, it has been a long time, and as shameful as it is, it s just a hell of a lot easier to press a button and download some tunes. But I just got paid, so I'm going to buy myself a present. The new Kate Nash album is out next week and I might just pop down to JB to get it. I adore Kate Nash and she caused one of my favourite adventures while in the USA a couple years ago.

Wow.

That trip was two years ago.

Where has the time gone?

Monday, April 12, 2010

If I lived here I would never leave

terrible horrible.

It seems Liv is no longer following my blog. Fair enough considering I left it abandoned and flailing in the innernetz ghetto for quite a while. But never fear! Jess is here!

Anyway... Yeah. I'm fairly sure I'm detecting a relatively bad patch ahead. Things feel ominous. Perhaps I'm just hormonal, or it may be attributed to having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Does anyone else remember that book? Poor, poor Alexander. This book was to me what Dashboard Confessional was to Emo's. Seriously. Judith understood me, man!

But seriously. I am seeing storm clouds ahead, unfortunately. I'm apologising in advance.

I think I may post a picture of a lovely house next, to make me happier.

Getting your period 2 days before going camping?

Fuckin' unbelievable.

I Heart This

Every time I read Stephen Fry's letter to his 16 year old self I well up a little. It's just beautiful.

---------------------------

I hope you are well. I know you are not. As it happens you wrote in 1973 a letter to your future self and it is high time that your future self had the decency to write back. You declared in that letter (reproduced in your 1997 autobiography Moab Is My Washpot) that "everything I feel now as an adolescent is true". You went on to affirm that if ever you dared in later life to repudiate, deny or mock your 16-year-old self it would be a lie, a traducing, treasonable lie, a crime against adolescence. "This is who I am," you wrote. "Each day that passes I grow away from my true self. Every inch I take towards adulthood is a betrayal."

Oh, lord love you, Stephen. How I admire your arrogance and rage and misery. How pure and righteous they are and how passionately storm-drenched was your adolescence. How filled with true feeling, fury, despair, joy, anxiety, shame, pride and above all, supremely above all, how overpowered it was by love. My eyes fill with tears just to think of you. Of me. Tears splash on to my keyboard now. I am perhaps happier now than I have ever been and yet I cannot but recognise that I would trade all that I am to be you, the eternally unhappy, nervous, wild, wondering and despairing 16-year-old Stephen: angry, angst-ridden and awkward but alive. Because you know how to feel, and knowing how to feel is more important than how you feel. Deadness of soul is the only unpardonable crime, and if there is one thing happiness can do it is mask deadness of soul.

I finally know now, as I easily knew then, that the most important thing is love. It doesn't matter in the slightest whether that love is for someone of your own sex or not. Gay issues are important and I shall come to them in a moment, but they shrivel like a salted snail when compared to the towering question of love. Gay people sometimes believe (to this very day, would you credit it, young Stephen?) that the preponderance of obstacles and terrors they encounter in their lives and relationships is intimately connected with the fact of their being gay. As it happens at least 90% of their problems are to do with love and love alone: the lack of it, the denial of it, the inequality of it, the missed reciprocity in it, the horrors and heartaches of it. Love cold, love hot, love fresh, love stale, love scorned, love missed, love denied, love betrayed ... the great joke of sexuality is that these problems bedevil straight people just as much as gay. The 10% of extra suffering and complexity that uniquely confronts the gay person is certainly not incidental or trifling, but it must be understood that love comes first. This is tough for straight people to work out.

Straight people are encouraged by culture and society to believe that their sexual impulses are the norm, and therefore when their affairs of the heart and loins go wrong (as they certainly will), when they are flummoxed, distraught and defeated by love, they are forced to believe that it must be their fault. We gay people at least have the advantage of being brought up to expect the world of love to be imponderably and unmanageably difficult, for we are perverted freaks and sick aberrations of nature. They - poor normal lambs - naturally find it harder to understand why, in Lysander's words, "the course of true love never did run smooth".

Sexual availability, so long an impossible dream in your age, becomes the norm in the late 70s and early 80s, only to be shattered by a new disease whose horrors you cannot even imagine. You would little believe that I can say to you now across the gap of 35 years that we are the blessed ones. The people of Britain are happy (or not) because of Tolpuddle Martyrs, Chartists, infantry regiments, any number of ancestors who made the world more comfortable for them. And we, gay people, are happy now (or not) in large part thanks to Stonewall rioters, Harvey Milk, Dennis Lemon, Gay News, Ian McKellen, Edwina Currie (true) et al, and the battered bodies of bullied, beaten and abused gay men and women who stood up to be counted and refused to apologise for the way they were. It has given us something we never thought to have: pride. For a thousand years, shame was our lot and now, turning on a sixpence, we have arrived at pride - without even, it seems, an intervening period of well-it's-OK-I-suppose-wouldn't-have-chosen-it-but-there-you-go. Who'da thought it?

I know what you are doing now, young Stephen. It's early 1973. You are in the library, cross-referencing bibliographies so that you can find more and more examples of queer people in history, art and literature against whom you can hope to validate yourself. Leonardo, Tchaikovsky, Wilde, Barons Corvo and von Gloeden, Robin Maugham, Worsley, "an Englishman", Jean Genet, Cavafy, Montherlant, Roger Peyrefitte, Mary Renault, Michael Campbell, Michael Davies, Angus Stewart, Gore Vidal, John Rechy, William Burroughs.

So many great spirits really do confirm that hope! It emboldens you to know that such a number of brilliant (if often doomed) souls shared the same impulse and desires as you. I know the index-card waltz of (auto)biographies, poems and novels you are dancing: those same names are still so close to the surface of my mind nearly four decades later. Novels, poetry and the worlds of art and ideas are opening up in front of you almost incidentally. You spend all your time in the library yearning to be told that you are not alone, and an unlooked for side-effect of this just happens to be a real education achieved in a private school designed for philistine bumpkins. Being born queer has given you, by mistake, a fantastic advantage over the rugger-playing ordinaries who surround you. But those rugger-playing ordinaries have souls too. And you should know that. I know you cannot believe it now. They seem so secure, so assured, so blessedly normal. They gave Cuthbert Worsley the Kipling-derived title of his overwhelmingly important (to you) autobiography The Flannelled Fool: "these are the men that have lost their soul/ The flannelled fool at he wicket/ And the muddied oaf at the goal".

You look down at the fools almost as much as you fear them. The ordinary people, whose path through life is guaranteed. They won't have to spend their days in public libraries, public lavatories and public courts ashamed, spurned and reviled. There is no internet. No Gay News. No gay chatlines. No men-seeking-men personals. No out-and-proud celebs. Just a world of shame and secrecy.

Somehow, as you age, a miracle will be wrought. You will begin by descending deeper into the depths: expulsion, crime and prison - nothing really to do with being gay, but everything to do with love and your inability to cope with it. Yet you will, as the Regency rakes used to say, "make a recover" and find yourself at university, where it will be astonishingly easy to be open about your sexuality. No great trick, for the university is Cambridge, long a hotbed of righteous tolerance, spiritual heavy-petting and homo hysteria. You will emerge from Cambridge and enter a world where being "out" is no big deal, although a puzzlingly small number of your coevals will find it as easy as you to emerge from the shadows. Before you damn anyone for failing to come out, look to their parents. The answer almost always lies there. Oh how lucky in that department, as in so many, you are, young Stephen.

But don't kid yourself. For millions of teenagers around Britain and everywhere else, it is still 1973. Taunts, beatings and punishment await gay people the world over in playgrounds and execution grounds (the distance between which is measured by nothing more than political constitutions and human will). Yes, you will grow to be a very, very, very, very lucky man who is able to express his nature out loud without fear of hatred or reprisal from any except the most deluded, demented and sad. But that is a small battle won. A whole theatre of war remains. This theatre of war is bigger than the simple issue of being gay, just as the question of love swamps the question of mere sexuality. For alongside sexual politics the entire achievement of the enlightenment (which led inter alia to gay liberation) is under threat like never before. The cruel, hypocritical and loveless hand of religion and absolutism has fallen on the world once more.

So my message from the future is twofold. Fear not, young Stephen, your life will unfold in richer, more accepted and happier ways than you ever dared hope. But be wary, for the most basic tenets of rationalism, openness and freedom that nourish you now and seem so unassailable are about to be harried and besieged by malevolent, mad and medieval minds.

You poor dear, dear thing. Look at you weltering in your misery. The extraordinary truth is that you want to stay there. Unlike so many of the young, you do not yearn for adulthood, pubs and car keys. You want to stay where you are, in the Republic of Pubescence, where feeling has primacy and pain is beautiful. And you know what ... ?

I think you are right.

I want to run away to Paris... and Toronto... and Cesky Krumlov... Just some pretty places with old buildings and some history. I've been day dreaming like mad the last week. My iPhoto folder of kitchens and loungerooms and pretty places has quadrupled in size.

Well, then.

Haven't I got myself into a bind.

... To be continued. Or maybe not.

itchy feet

There is a huge mansion in Battery Point, Tasmania for sale and although it is on Sandy Bay Rd (not the best) I nearly dropped the computer upon seeing the completely stripped back top floor. It had apparently been a number of apartments but these had been gutted and they have plants to make it a penthouse suite.

*swoons*

Going by experience, the only places beyond Melbourne that I would be happy to inhabit would be Hobart or San Francisco. I completely fell for the surrounds of Hobart last year, and I have fond memories of perambulating around Frisco and Sausalito as a teenager.

I have itchy feet that are to be firmly planted in the one spot for the next two years.

what do *YOU* think?

I'm tossing up whether moving back to my parent's place to conserve funds and focus would be a good idea. It means I would have the cash to go to Europe at the end of the trip and not be relying on a big loan as I thought I would be. This would mean I could save a house deposit sooner...

So much to think about.

Gab is dreaming about travelling.

vacation thoughts

I was hesitantly thinking about a trip to the States to visit family - all my family - before I realised how many places I would have to visit to complete such a venture. Boston and Rochester in Massachusetts, Albany, Buffalo, White Plains and NYC (all in NY state) Washington DC, Detroit, Florida, Seattle, Wisconsin and Texas. I have family in Jersey and California whom I've never met and apparently some peeps in Argentina?

Jeez. That would be quite a trip...

sweltering Melbourne

Living on a tram line that goes directly to the beach??? A very good idea, especially on days like today. 43 degrees Celsius!
